2019 – Renowned International Curators to Select DocPoint’s International Programme

The next DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival will present an exceptional group of programming specialists. The three curators – Sirkka Möller (Germany), Sergio Fant (Italy) and Pieter-Jan van Damme (Belgium) – come together to program one special edition of the festival to provide an international outlook and enriching discoveries to the Finnish festival audience. The 18th edition of DocPoint will be held from January 28th to February 3rd, 2019.

With combined experiences of programming for some of the most exciting documentary and film festivals, among them Berlinale, Locarno Festival and One World Human Rights Documentary Film Festival, the Selection Committee wants to present a programme of outstanding and surprising documentary films from around the world. “We are interested in the connections between the films, not only on stylistic, thematic and social levels but rather in wider, philosophical and historical contexts, reflecting how (documentary) films can be seen within broader concepts of the world around us”, says Sirkka Möller, Chair of Selection Committee.

“We are working on a selection of films and themes that we hope will resonate strongly and long with our audience. Working together as an international Selection Committee from different backgrounds forces us to phrase our passions about each film to one another. We like to believe this will enhance the quality and diversity of our selection”, says Pieter-Jan Van Damme.

As a festival set up by filmmakers, DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival has always celebrated filmmakers who have shown extraordinary dedication to telling their stories, old masters as well as new talents, traditional documentarians as well as hybrid storytellers working between fiction and reality. The Selection Committee also aims at highlighting the difficult role of directors in the current social, political and media landscape. “In a world that is becoming increasingly more authoritarian and dangerous for critical filmmakers, we would like to draw attention to those who are suffering for their art.”
