Every morning a fisherman watches the sun rise in colours specific for that particular morning. The sunrise is different every single day. The sight is beautiful and serene.
A bit too beautiful and serene: he has been fishing at a conservation area, where fishing is prohibited. When officials find out, he loses his fishing license. The man is yanked from his solitary sunrises to the real world. He curses the officials: how will he provide for his family now? His daughter is about to be married and his wife just bought a vacuum cleaner worth 520 euros?
Ashore portrays life in a small ancient fishing village near Lisbon, Portugal: the local culture, relationships and families, from work-filled everyday life to fancy boat parades and weddings. Between the pressure of rule dictating distant authorities and the ever-changing world, they try to keep up their old ways of life.
In the end, the most important things in life are the connections between people and family. As it is everywhere.
