”You must be ready to die on the field.” – Alina’s football team’s coach
Alina, the power forward of a football team from Kiev, is expecting a call to join the Ukrainian women’s national team. Alina’s own coach is demanding but encouraging – the dream of joining the national team is possible to achieve; all it takes is a little more work and practice. The team’s practice and game conditions are harsh at times, but who would not be willing to give everything for football? ”You must be ready to die on the field,” says the coach to his team before a game.
Alina’s life is tough, and not only on the field. Her mother’s sudden death makes her responsible for the family at one fell swoop. Alina’s stepsisters are largely her responsibility now. Her grandmother is not much help, and the stepfather, a drunk, even less so. The apartment is in poor shape and money is tight.
Patiently, Alina keeps mending her football boots and trying to make a better life for her younger siblings. The little ones get kisses, love and birthday parties. But what about Alina’s own dreams?
