The concept of coming out of the closet is still unfortunately relevant, and no wonder. If what you have waiting outside the closet is a violent family and the reality of ending up on the street, it’s safer to keep the doors closed. In the best of scenarios, there never was a closet, but coming out is only a formality and after that life goes on like before.
Out consists of material filmed by LGBT youths coming out to their families. Even if some of the home video material is purely heart warming, the reality to some is a hard one. When a mother coldly states that she expects her child to move out of the house, it is difficult not to feel distressed. Let this also serve as a warning: parts of the film are shocking.
Providing hope for the future are parents who remain unaffected by the news. Honesty towards yourself and others isn’t always easy in this world, but it can be cleansing. You can cry tears of joy as well as sadness.
