Tarling is Darling

Dangdut is Indonesian and means upbeat folk music. Dangdut songs tell stories about worthless men. The audience involving and sexy performances are popular entertainment and the women who work in the business have a rare chance of becoming rich. However, succeeding in this line of work requires a male mentor and putting up with the misogynistic working culture.

Dangdut culture has become more frowned upon during the rise of conservative Islam. Aside from efforts of censure, the music industry of dangdut also has to fight against piracy.

With its long shots, Tarling is Darling dives deep into the intimate lives of its protagonists and the steamy atmosphere of Javan nightclubs, where the performances give Eurovision a run for its money.
