It might hang heavy in your mind if the person closest to you joins an ultra conservative Christian community where they live as closed off from the surrounding world as one would be in prison.
This is what happened to Zita Erffa. Her brother László joined the Roman Catholic organization Legion of Christ that recruits children and youths from upper class families. The closer you are to power, the easier it is to spread the joy of the gospel. The founder of the Legion, Marciel Maciel, ended up having to step down because of accusations of paedophilia – the religious leader also had a drug problem and two families.
Studying to become a priest takes over ten years and the advanced have more privileges than beginners: for example novices are only allowed to watch films about saints but the more advanced are allowed to watch the news as well.
In her personal and therapeutic documentary Erffa tries to understand her brother’s choice and the making of this film offers a new chance of that. The end result is not only cleansing but also freshly executed.
